(Forget the porn associations) Watermelon Really is Good for Your Sex Life

Can you imagine summer without being sticky, red and juicy? Watermelon makes everyone happy and it is just about to make you ecstatic. Prepare for the ultimate marketing pull-off.

Watermelon is good for your sex life

As if its not enough that it tastes as sweet as childhood summers but is healthy and can be dietetic, researchers at Texas A&M University (Patil et al.) have just discovered that it is a natural sexual aid.

Watermelon contains a chemical known as citrulline. Actually, it is mostly in the rind, but it is also found in the sweet flesh of the fruit. Once you digest it, it converts into arginine, which triggers nitric acid and therefore relaxes the blood vessels, especially around the genital area. Translation: blood collects in the nether areas, the same effect caused by Viagra and friends, leading to erections in men and lubrication in women. Something to think about on those long, hot mid-summer nights....

And for those who stay away from watermelon because of the sugar, the same experts tell us that citrulline and arginine can be beneficial for obesity and diabetes type 2 (not only because it may lead to sex, but for unelaborated physiological reasons too).

Now Here is Something that Should be Covered Up

Kudos to Malaysia where condoms and women made the headlines this past week – in the same sentence!

Something good seems to be going down in Malaysia because they just celebrated International AIDS Memorial Day, the first time such an event is being held openly in a Muslim country. But the hero of this story is deputy health minister, Abdul Latiff Ahmad, who recommended that every woman carry a condom, for her own protection against HIV.

   Malaysian women and HIV

The tomatoes are already starting to fly at Prof. Abdul Latiff, especially in the blogosphere, by all those people who think that condoms corrupt and such entitlement is going to change all women into prostitutes and promiscuous floozies. The poor guy has now gone under the media radar screen, so we can only hope he won't be taking it all back next week. After all, his original comment was never meant to make him popular but to consider the reality of new HIV infections in his country.

And here's another newsflash: we knew HIV/AIDS doesn't have borders or know colours, but it turns out that it doesn't have a religion either.

a womanist embrace of obama

It actually warms my heart to read Toni Morrison's and now Alice Walker's endorsements of Obama. Both of these writers have been so instrumental in my own creative and intellectual work. They are also wellsprings of wisdom for those of us who are humble enough to listen.
